Summary
This local law, Int. No. 69, sponsored by Council Member Won and others, prohibits New York City agencies from entering into or renewing contracts for the purchase of single-use plastic water containers. A "single-use plastic water container" is defined as a sealed plastic container of less than one gallon containing flat, unflavored drinking water, intended for one-time use. Exceptions are permitted when necessary for health, safety, welfare, emergency response, or when conflicting with existing contracts or labor agreements predating the law's effective date. The law takes effect immediately upon becoming law. The City Council Finance Division estimates no impact on revenues or expenditures, as existing resources would be used.
Citizen Impact
This law aims to reduce plastic waste and pollution by limiting city agencies' procurement of single-use plastic water bottles. Residents may see fewer single-use plastic water bottles purchased by city agencies for official use, contributing to the city's environmental goals.
