Summary
This local law establishes a pilot program to educate public school students and staff on reducing surplus food and diverting food waste from landfills. The Mayor will designate an office or agency to coordinate with the NYC Department of Education (DOE) Chancellor to develop these educational materials. These materials, which will be tailored for different age groups and professions, are to be delivered to the Chancellor by August 1, 2026. The Chancellor will then distribute them to all schools, staff, and students on four specific dates: September 1, 2026; February 1, 2027; September 1, 2027; and February 1, 2028. A final report evaluating the program, its challenges, and future recommendations is due by December 31, 2028. The City Council estimates no new expenditures, as DOE will utilize existing resources, though the Office of Management and Budget projects $248,000 annually for two DSNY staff analysts.
Citizen Impact
This program will educate students and school staff on practical ways to reduce food waste, promoting environmental responsibility and potentially leading to more efficient use of food resources in public schools.
