The Board of Architectural Review (BAR) is considering two related applications for 814 Prince Street in the Old and Historic Alexandria District.

BAR#2025-00484 requests a Certificate of Appropriateness for alterations and an addition to the property. This involves demolishing approximately 362 SF of the rear/south elevation and partially encapsulating 362 SF of the west/rear elevation of the existing two-story rear addition, as well as 155 SF of the rear/south third story of the main building. The proposal includes a new three-story addition with a footprint of approximately 20’x20’, clad in wood siding with a standing seam metal roof and clad-wood double-hung windows.

BAR#2025-00485 requests a Permit to Demolish/Capsulate for the same portions of the structure. Staff recommends approval for both applications, finding that the portions to be demolished/capsulated do not meet the criteria for preservation and that the proposed addition is compatible with the historic district.

Several city departments have provided comments, including Zoning, Code Administration, and Transportation and Environmental Services, outlining various code requirements and recommendations for compliance. Alexandria Archaeology notes the property's potential to contain significant archaeological remains from mid-nineteenth century development and provides conditions for discovery during development.
